Five Lives, Five Pictures

by Amy

Well, here’s our last look at your pop art submissions. It’s been a great last week for this challenge, I found so many photos full of energy and life…. Here are my picks this week:

Now Ellyjane may be sitting in a well manicured park in her urban cowgirl hat, but doesn’t she look like she’s longing for life on the trail? Like she on the look out for adventure? She looks so cool and calm, but ready at a moments notice… Ever watchful, and she has to be in her occupation.

Never mind the ‘Andy’ reference with the wig, doesn’t it look like Twiggy is about to be attacked? Shelba’s look of pure terror is amazing, especially as a self portrait. The angle… the out stretched and blurry hand all add to this dramatic effect.

There are two types of people in the world… Those who like road trips (like me) and those who don’t. (my husband) For me, a road trip means adventure, eating junk food, music, conversation, seeing silly things you’ll talk about for a life time… There’s an excited energy about me leading up to a road trip and this picture from Gay makes me feel it all over again.

Retro chair, bright colors, polka dots, and hip sunglasses… there’s nothing that doesn’t ‘pop’ in this image. I love how Bethany’s face looks almost painted.

I know this image doesn’t scream with energy to most people and there is no obvious family reference either. For some of you, this is where a lot of your high school misadventures started. These shoes were with you when you got dumped, when you took that trip to the lake with friends, when you realized your true love… You go through phases where you’ve worn them every day and then they’d be tossed in the closet for a more pricey pair for a while. Maybe you even chase your kids around in them now, all while your kids sport their own pair. There is just something about these shoes!

Ok, on to July.

You Make Me Feel Like…

by Shelba

Word Salad
Word Salad

She looks like she is under water because her hair appears to be swirling around her head. I see her as a mermaid or a siren trying to hypnotize the viewer with her eyes. Look into my eyes….you’re getting sleepy. This feels very dreamy and airy to me. She makes me feel like following her under water.

Bungalow 360
Bungalow 360

I love this. This is a girl who loves her puppy. I love that both she and the dog appear to be naked. I love how she is gently holding the puppy. How she is looking off to the side. I love the grainyness of the photograph. This seems like a snapshot from a movie or maybe a vintage postcard. She makes me want to pet the puppy.

Something To Say
Something To Say

One of my absolute faves for all of this month. It seems as though I’m about to enter into another world. Like maybe I’ve been living a plain and colorless existence, but if I just walk through that door the world will come alive. The room through the door is so colorful and bright. And why is she standing there looking down? She makes me want to walk through the door.

Sarcomical
Sarcomical

I love, love, love this. I don’t have much to say about this one other than I love it. I love her eyelashes, how the color is applied to her cheeks, lips, forehead and eyes. She makes me want to touch her lips and forehead to see if the red smears.

Joyful Girl
Joyful Girl

I love the wings. I can’t take my eyes off of her wings. Who are you? Yes, who are you? A fairy? I am too lazy to get my glasses out so I can’t read what is in the bubble over her head, but maybe even my glasses wouldn’t help with that, I don’t know. I just know that I wish I had wings like that. So yeah, she makes me jealous of her wings.

This has been a great month of self portraits, but I am dying to see what y’all come up with next month. See you then!

Five Lives, Five Pictures

“Popular, transient, expendable, low-cost, mass-produced, young, witty, sexy, gimmicky, glamorous, and Big Business”…. I’ve read it over and over, and this is the first week I feel even slightly confident in my entry. If you guys feel as apprehensive about posting as I do, it sure doesn’t show, and there were some great pieces this week. Here are a few of my favorites:

If only I could wake up every morning feeling this way. Even manipulated, you can still see the huge smile on her face. The bold color backs Krista’s stated sentiment. That text didn’t even need to be there, you can tell she’s a supermom!

I hate to say it because she’s a beautiful woman, but she looks a bit alien here… or bruised? You have to sit and stare at this photo, which you just can’t help doing, so you can see how the colors play nicely together and the lines in her face start to make sense. Misty’s eyes are very intense.

Even if she doesn’t care what I think, I love this image! Everything is opposing here: dark dress/light wall, dark eyes/pale face, darker hair/sparkiling tiara. Even her attitude… She made the effort to get dressed and get there but her face plays like she doesn’t care what happens.

The image is manipulated so that much that the original detail is lost in a very comic book manner. Lori’s use of dots is perfectly “Pop” and make her head and camera stand out from the background. I like this one and I can’t fully explain why.

‘Sin City’ is the obvious reference, but very much like ‘The Matrix’ as well. In fact, this is a figure you’ll see in many movies, just different versions. He looks almost robotic… certainly evil, or maybe the star of an 80’s music video?

You’ve got one more shot with this challenge before we change it up on you again…. *wink*

Carletta’s Friday Faves: Pop Art Challenge Week 3

by lessthanperfect

I’m still really impressed by the creativity that you guys have with this pop art challenge, because I wasn’t sure how people would respond. So here are my favorites from this week:

I love just how much is going on in this photo. Plus I’ve been wanting to do a composite photo for forever so I’m mostly jealous.

This image is a bit naughty, a bit sinister and a little sexy all at once.

Here the author looks so tiny in front of this piece of art. And I love the lights and shadows.

Another one of those images that just has a dark and kind of naughtiness lying just beneath the surface. It’s also one of those images that you don’t catch everything the first time you look at it. Go ahead, look again.

You know how you look at a picture and you smile because you love it but you couldn’t explain why you loved it so much? This is one of those for me.

I think I’m so intrigued because I have NO idea what that thing that Joy is kissing actually is.

Love Life Live Love
Love Life Live Love

I’m loving the composition here. The black of the picture and silhouette of the woman. The neon glow of the room and of the paint splatters from the painting. I could look at her looking at the painting all day. I feel like I stuck my head in a room, but I don’t want to make any noise because she is so into this painting. She makes me feel like whispering.

Caged Pixels

Pop art? Oh yeah, pop art for sure. I love the repetition of the dots and that she is a cartoon. And hello, she loves her camera! And you know her camera loves her back. I guess that is why she is called Photographer Lori, right? This photograph makes me laugh. It is a happy, funny surprise. She makes me smile.

Moki
Moki

Ahh, the bored socialite. I love this photograph. I love the white space, I love her bared shoulder. Is she wearing some sort of t-shirt or is she wearing a ballgown? And the tiara, love it! I imagine that she is at a fancy schmancy gala and she’d rather be somewhere else. She makes me want to ask her to go to the bathroom with me so she can fill me in on what or who has bored/annoyed her.

Planet Shannon
Planet Shannon

Oh, I love this. Red and hazy. Look at those eyes! The intensity of the red makes me think of anger. Blood. Rage. Fire. Her gaze is seductive. I don’t know what to think about this, I just know that all I see in this is her eyes, staring right back at me. This is very intense. Who am I that I’m looking at her like this and that she is looking at me like this? Very interesting. She makes me curious.

Michelle Kaplan
Michelle Caplan

This photograph feels very sweet to me. She is not smiling, but there is a softness in her eyes. This is a photograph that decades upon decades from now, someone that loves her (maybe the person she is looking at) will use to remember the young Michelle Caplan. There is a dreamy sweetness to this. She makes me feel as though though time is standing still.

Ramblings Of An Ever Hungry Mind

Five Lives, Five Pictures

by Amy

Our contributors have been doing a wonderful job with all the information on our current challenge, but even I still feel my submissions for “pop art” are a shot in the dark. I’ve found the best fix for a stifled mind is a few moving examples, so here we go:

Janet seems to fade into the background and then these dark features just seem to pop out at you. She gives off an energy of peaceful happiness. Doesn’t she remind you a bit of Snow White here?

Bitchen sunglasses aside, those colors are striking. Never in my life time would I have thought to put them together, but see how they work? She looks as if she’s about to follow her favorite band to the next gig with a little bit of “I’m going whether you come or not.”

A touch of the stern principle offset by a sexy little black dress. It’s like she’s privately sizing you up. There’s a feeling around her that you want to be a part of but it’s for the hip kids only.

Sometimes if you let your guard down you’ll be surprised at what good can come of it. If you don’t read her blog right away, her picture alone has that bit of sass… a bit of “yah, I did it and I’ll do it again.” The extreme levels make her eyes and cheekbones jump out at you, and then the pink looks almost like a trademark… like you’d find pink lip marks all the places she’s been.

Another faithful SPC member and another great image. This could be used as an ad for a sports team with the opposing colors. How about the logo of a company? With how little detail from the original picture is left it’s almost like an illustration… but isn’t it neat how much detail is there still? Every hair stands out and you can still tell beyond a doubt it’s Danny.
