The World Around us

by noted

Urbanites are amazing. One would think that in a metropolis of thousands/millions of people it would be impossible to not be connected to the people around you.

But it isn’t.

Increasingly depression is on the rise and part of its root is that people don’t feel a part of anything. When babies are born, there isn’t a community rallying around the new mother with meals, advice, childcare for older siblings. Somehow we lost something in gaining a million neighbours.

Yet at the same time we gained the benefits of the knowledge of artists around us, diversity in ideas and the opportunity to partake in a variety of different activities that smaller enclaves of people may not have the opportunity to experience.

My mama has always said that something has to give, what do you think?

on the street - fave for this week

by kricketson

Two faves this week - both of them use dramatic colours and are mysterious and enticing. They make the most of an ordinary place / situation to create drama and an interesting photo.

On The Street Week 2 (Elizaboothy’s Picks)

by elizaboothy

I love street photography and as someone who roams pretty sleepy streets, this challenge has been a tough one. But I’m getting pretty inspired by all of your photos — while I do lean towards the more urban shots, not all of us have a lot of urban in our lives and so many of you have figured out really clever ways to marry the spirit of street photography into your everyday surroundings. Here are some of my faves:

my fave of the week

Melissa Tulip

I love the angle of the shot - it gives it a real voyeuristic feeling. Also the black and white gives it an edgy timeless feel (even though the car does date it).

Good work for the first week. This is a tough challenge but really interesting results. I have noticed a few of you are finding this particularly challenging. Challenging your photographic skills as well as your personal space and self.

on the street week 1

I am so excited by this challenge (as I am with them all in the first week), and already I can see its going to be a goodie.

So I’m having a totally crap day, everything is working against me and I’ve been told my dearest, sweet, boy cat is not long for this life. … so I just wanted to go outside and take a stinking photo of myself that didn’t suck scissors but my remote wouldn’t cooperate with me and the neighbor girl who I cannot stand kept running outside to bother me, the whole time my dogs were barking their faces off inside the house. I just wanted to put me head under the car wheel and release the hand brake.

baby faith I do like that the side of that truck says “2 fellas” on it. You think they have “2 fellas” living inside there?

momster our family was strolling through Auvers-sur-Oise, the village where Vincent Van Gogh spent the last 100 days of his life.

on the street - May challenge

by kricketson

The challenge for May - is street photography - with YOU in it. Capture yourself somehow, somewhere on the street. With or without others around or others in the photo frame. You could ask someone else to press the shutter for you or carry around your tripod - whatever you do it has to have a ’street photography’ vibe to it. What is that you ask - well Amy Stein says that good street photography should be voyeuristic, immediate, and uncomfortably intimate. It is also often thought to need to be ironic and distanced from its subject matter, concentrating on a single human moment, caught at a decisive or poignant moment.

Street photography usually utilises landscape format wide angle lense - to allow more action in the picture, to capture more than one main story. It is a type of documentary photography but it is in public places and captures an immediacy and frankness that is thought to be very human.

Read more about street photography - what its all about and how to go about it here and here and here and on wikipedia.

Examples of interesting street photography - here, here, here, here.

More examples: regular people, interesting backdrop, love the sense of place and sense of purpose, just the bottom half - its enough to tell a story, great red and her expression is caught in the moment, love the colours and what is the person behind the pillar doing, oooh fantastic expressions, this is just perfect, and this is just plain fantastic.
