Normally the color of a person’s skin is a topic we try to avoid, because really - the goal is to see that we’re all just people underneath it all. It doesn’t matter who you are on the outside, it’s what’s on the inside.
I have watched my family morph through five generations, from my Great Grandmother - who obviously had completely different opinions from mine, to my own mother… who worked hard to make sure we didn’t differentiate between the people around us, based on anything besides action (or inaction).
I have watched my own daughter interact with other children and the world around her - and I am really and truly proud that at this point in her life she only describes people by who they are, not what they look like. Sometimes it makes things a little difficult (finding the happy boy on the playground, when there are 5 other smiling little boys) - but so be it.
If we want to use color to talk about people, let’s bring out the blues and reds… because those colors represent more than just American political parties or flags… those are the hues that we all share under the surface. Everything else is just icing.
Nicole’s picture is simple, but really, really wonderful. I would highly suggest visiting her blog to read the accompanying quote. The two together were a perfect post.
