I usually have to change to settings depending on where and what I am shooting. That remote that bazl was mentioning sounds like a great idea. For the majority of my self portraits I usually select a large aperature and a very low ISO, but it really depends on what I'm trying to achieve. The smartest purchase I made was the $15 remote. When I'm taking a portrait type shot, I usually keep it in aperature priority with a fairly low ISO and the biggest aperature setting whatever lens I'm using has.
