January Challenge - Personal History

Time for a new challenge - I thought I would start the year off by looking back.

Personal History

Explore the cross over between self portraiture and family photography. This challenge can be as simple as revisiting old family snap shots - to tell a story.

Technical advice - scan in old pics - or photograph old pics. Use them in various ways to think back on your journey through life, your achievements, mistakes, highlights and low points. Perhaps you could make a time line or overlay several images. Tell a story.

update: for those not feeling this challenge - or having difficulty accessing old photos - why not try a different tack and revisit old places from your past - or use found photographs or old newspaper images to illustrate your story.

Example artist - Lorie Novak - “fragments”

exerpt taken from Collected Memories:Lorie Novak’s Virtual Family Album by Marianne Hirsch

Novak portrays herself as embedded in numerous relationships - familial, generational, cultural. She interconnects her own memories with public memories of the period in which she grew up and the media images that gave her access to them - the memory of World War Two and the Holocaust, the Cold War, the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War. She examines stereotyped images of femininity and masculinity, and of other social institutions. She thus situates subjectivity at the juncture between the self-portrait and the family picture, and its representation at the juncture between personal and public camera images.

oooh this is a great topic Kath!!! I’m excited!

I turned 30 in August, and I am planning on printing out (most are digital) all my SPTs from this year, and making a scrapbook from them. Thanks for adding this history to it!

I have to say, Kath. I think the theme is really fantastic too.

It opens the doors to a lot of self-exporation and creativity.

I can hardely wait!

Oh my, this is quite a project. I may get one done properly. My problem is not access to old photographs of me, but the access to a flat scanner. I can’t run my precious old pictures through the one I have at home as it may destroy them. I also don’t think I have softward to make a digital collage…but I’d like to!

Thank you and Joy (from Oh Joy) so much for inspiring me to get in on the action. I’ve really loved going through the albums, looking at others’ images and memories, and look forward to more themes.
