October Challenge - Self documentary series

The challenge for October is to do a self documentary series.
Self documentary - document yourself for a moment, for a day, for a week. Document a specific event or an ordinary day. Be honest, be real, be true, try to be a little gritty, do not gloss over, do not only show the pretty images.
Series - 3 images or more - a sequence of events, tell a story.

Try using text to add to the story or explain an image.

How to do it - use your self time, use a tripod - if you don’t have a self timer - be the director and editor and ask someone else to be the photographer. If you don’t have a tripod, try sitting the camera on a bench with a towel or wheat bag to steady and angle the camera.

Inspiration and ideas:
See my images below - a few photos from a series I did a few years ago consisting of a year of documenting my life and thousands of images.

Some artists and projects work to check out:
Self documentary:
Marianne Mueller :: jo spence :: documented life :: nan goldin ::

Domestic documentary:
Bill Owens - suburbia :: Nancy Honey :: Richard Billingham - Ray’s a laugh :: Larry Sultan - pictures from home :: William Eggleston :: Martin Parr - the cost of living, common sense and signs of the times :: Tina Barney - theater of manners ::

A moment.

The dishes are piling up, the house is a mess, I am surrounded by evidence of motherhood.

I often carry her around. She demands to be up where we are, she is annoyed at looking at legs all day. We are attached.

I Can’t get anything done. She whines and whinges until I distract her.

I long for a quiet moment.

Sick of chasing the baby around the house all day. Having a rest, thinking of what? the days are passing.

Where ever I go I am followed, everything I do I have a helper.

She is an observer.

What a great challenge. Maybe i should document the birth of my baby? Hmm, not sure you want to see that.

Great idea. I hope i can pull it off. Do you suggest a series each Tuesday, or is the month considered the series? Your series is fantastic. That really is something to aim for. And I love your sofa/arm chair. Very cool.

Nikki - do the birth -
dani - you could either do something different each week - keeping the different aspects of your life separate - work, social, alone time etc. or you could do a continuous serious for the whole month and post a few from it each week.

love your docu photos and it’s soooo recognisable. I think the loo photo is so funny. I don’t think I’ve had a private loo moment for about erm 3 years ;) but never thought about photographing it.

This is a wonderful theme. I especially love your challenge to not just show the “pretty pictures”. That is such a hard thing to do.. To just be honest with what is real… because even though I have no way to edit my pictures and “make” them prettier… I dispose of hundreds because I don’t like the way they look in some tiny way or other. Thanks for making me think… and thank you for sharing that wonderful series with you and your daughter. I felt like a kindred spirit while experiencing them… motherhood is exactly that!

i didn’t do the body parts challenge cause i didn’t want to be tied down, but this one is so challenging i think i’ll have to give it a shot. my two favorite conceptual documentary series:

1. eleanor antin’s “carving: a traditional sculpture”
2. mary kelly’s “post partum document”

check them out for some more inspiration!

Hit home… I can’t seem to get a private moment and it’s getting harder to remember when I didn’t have a toddler attached - especially in the loo. ;)

Ok, I gave it a try. That was really fun, and quite challenging with my crappy little digital camera!
